The Pig | The Sides Stories
Continuing the holiday BBQ tour through NC, the second stop was The Pig in Chapel Hill. From the yelp reviews, it warned us that though they have whole hog BBQ (the best kind), the star of the meal was clearly the sides.
Upon arriving and admiring the ornate iron pig, we entered the doors of this casual restaurant to a rather extensive menu. Not only do they sell plates of different cuts of pork, but they also have fried chicken, fish and other specialties. We decided to order a few different plates, including a veggie combo (choice for 3 sides) to share.
Don’t get me wrong. Everything was pretty tasty. The beef brisket had an impressive amount of smoky edges. The chopped Carolina BBQ was tender and the sauce gave it the right tanginess. The real star of the meal were the sides. I enjoyed their homemade pickles, the sprouts and shrooms and the fried green tomatoes. Perhaps it’s because they were unique and were rare delicacies – I can’t remember the last time I had a fried green tomato – but the meat didn’t stand out.
I wouldn’t discount this place though. Since we were going specifically for BBQ, we had set expectations. We saw many other diners partaking in other of The Pig’s delights, such as sandwiches, desserts and, of course, more sides. If you are looking for a place with multiple options for your crew, this would be a great lunch or dinner spot.
