Xinh’s Clam and Oyster House
This is one of the place I ran across in my trip planning that I got really excited about. Xinh used to work at Taylor Shellfish, one of the places I love, and she did such a great job cooking seafood dishes that she opened her own restaurant in Shelton. Sad to report, this was the most disappointing meal we had during our weekend trip out to the Alderbrook Resort.
We had high hopes when we arrived and saw the wall filled with photos of Xinh with renown TV chefs like Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern. The decor is one of a low-rate Chinese restaurant, but we know that some dives have the best food so we suspended our judgement.
Dinner started out nicely when we ordered a dozen oysters and we were delightfully surprised when we got this plate. As you can see, there are more than a dozen here! Since they are from Taylor Shellfish, they were delicious and fresh.
Then this is when it got crazy. We ordered the pan fried oyster and also the special, the panfried geoduck. Why are they all on one plate? Great question. Well, we had a small table for two and when the waitress was trying to set the plates down, it was getting crowded. She said, “I think we can put these on the same plate.” Then, she proceeded to pick up the geoduck with her bare hands and put them on the same plate as the fried oysters. I was so dumbstrucked that I couldn’t even say anything.
And to add insult to injury, the geoduck wasn’t even good! There was so much breading that I couldn’t even taste the geoduck (which also costed $17 for 4 small pieces).
We also ordered the clams in white wine and butter sauce, so we were quite confused when we saw this red tomato based sauce. It had an odd taste, but perhaps because it wasn’t what I expected. We ate what we could and left the rest on the plate. We couldn’t wait to get out of that place as quickly as possible. For having a bill close to $100 for the two of us, it was quite disappointing indeed.
